Scientific Advisory Board

We have formed a scientific advisory board that represents a synergistic, highly ethical, diverse, and balanced group of critical thinkers in each of their fields of expertise. We appreciate their support as we investigate diabetes, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome; and the strengths and limitations of the cyclic variations in altitude conditioning™ (CVAC™) process as a tool in the management of a complex and deadly epidemic.

Lawrence A. Burgess, MD

John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii

Dr. Burgess is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy and the John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii. He is a surgeon who recently completed a distinguished career in the Army, where he served as Chief of Surgical Services at Tripler Army Medical Center, and Consultant to the Surgeon General of the Army for Otolaryngology. While in the military, he developed and successfully implemented a web-based core curriculum on military-unique medical topics for all army interns in training.

As the Director of the Telehealth Research Institute at the University of Hawaii, he continues a close working relationship with the Department of Defense (DOD) in developing telehealth and advanced medical technologies, while assisting Hawaii and Pacific Rim organizations to improve their telehealth capabilities. The multidisciplinary, high-technology group under his direction also works closely with the Pacific Telehealth and Technology Hui at Tripler and the Veterans Administration (VA), to develop research and operational capability in virtual reality (VR) and simulation.

Donald A. Chu, PhD

Donald Chu received his PhD from Stanford University in 1974. His degree in Physical Therapy is also from Stanford. He has a Masters in Kinesiology & Physical Education from CSU, Hayward. He is a Professor Emeritus from CSU, Hayward after a teaching career spanning over twenty years. During the time from 1997- 2001, Dr. Chu served as the Program Director of the Ohlone College Physical Therapist Assistant program. From 2001-2003, Dr. Chu served as the Director of Athletic Training & Rehabilitation at Stanford University.

Dr. Chu has developed an extensive reputation in the field of sports rehabilitation and in the areas of fitness and conditioning. He has been credited with bringing “Plyometric Training” to the attention of the athletic world through his application of theoretical knowledge into practical demonstrations.


Craig Cisar, PhD

Dr. Cisar received a M.P.E. in exercise science, and a PhD in exercise physiology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and is certified by the ACSM as an Exercise Test Technologist. Dr. Cisar is also certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) as a Certified Strength and Specialist, D*, and a Certified Personal Trainer, D*. At San Jose State University, he primarily teaches in the area of exercise physiology and other related exercise science courses.

Anne L. Friedlander, PhD
Director of the Major Project on Mobility within the Stanford Center on Longevity (SCL) Director, Exercise Physiology Lab, Clinical Studies Unit at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System, Palo Alto, CA.

Within the SCL, Dr. Friedlander will develop innovative strategies to enhance mobility and function throughout the lifespan and promote collaborative efforts between academic research and industry. Dr. Friedlander is a Senior Research Scholar.

Dr. Friedlander received her MA and PhD in Exercise Physiology from the University of California, Berkeley. Following a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in the Division of Endocrinology, Geriatrics and Metabolism at Stanford University, she served as the Associate Director for Education in the Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). During that time she also was appointed as the Director of the Exercise Physiology Lab within the Clinical Studies Unit at the VAPAHCS. Over the past several years, Dr. Friedlander has also served as the Co-Director of the Human Performance track within the Program in Human Biology at Stanford University where she teaches classes in Exercise Physiology and Applied Topics in Physiology and Metabolism.

Dr. Friedlander has broad research experience in the field of exercise physiology with a special emphasis on the regulation of substrate use during exercise and environmental physiology (high altitude and heat). She and her colleagues at the US Army Research Institute for Environmental Medicine conduct ongoing laboratory and field studies, which investigate strategies to maximize physical and cognitive performance during acute and chronic high-altitude exposure.


Mike Nichols, MD

Dr. Nichols’ background in scientific theory construction at the University of Chicago, where he obtained his first graduate degree in the Philosophy of Science, led him to question current medical approaches to complex medical problems and led him eventually to found the TempusClinic. His medical degree is from Loyola University of Chicago and residency from Stanford University. He practiced medicine for twenty years prior to developing TempusClinic.

Amit Sharma, MD, FACP, FASN
Director of Clinical Research at Boise Kidney and Hypertension Institute
Meridian, Idaho

Dr. Sharma received his medical degree from Louisiana State University Medical Center, New Orleans. He subsequently completed an internship in Internal Medicine. He completed a Fellowship in Nephrology and Hypertension, and a Residency in Internal Medicine at the University of California, San Diego.

Dr. Sharma is a Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology and the American College of Physicians, and a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners. He also carries additional certification as a Specialist in Clinical Hypertension by the American Society of Hypertension.

Dr. Sharma’s primary research interests include the effects of continuous renal replacement therapy, referral patterns of chronic kidney disease and anemia, and the study of vascular calcification in pre-dialysis patients. He serves on the Editorial Board for the National Kidney Foundation’s Kidney Learning System.

Kris Vijay, MD, is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular medicine. Along with his directorship responsibilities at the SCRI, Dr. Vijay is also a practicing Noninvasive Cardiologist at Scottsdale Cardiovascular Center, Scottsdale, Arizona.

Dr. Vijay received his medical degree from the University of Mysore, Kasturba Medical College, in Mysore, India, in 1979, and postgraduate training in medicine and nephrology at KEM Hospital in Bombay, India. He then completed a residency in general internal medicine at Kettering General Hospital, Oxford Regional Authority, in England, and fellowship in endocrinology and diabetes at North Manchester General Hospital and St. Mary Hospital, Isle of Wight, University of Southampton, in England.

Dr. Vijay’s additional postgraduate training includes a residency in internal medicine at St. Mary’s Hospital, University of Rochester, and a fellowship in cardiology at Good Samaritan Medical Center, University of Arizona.

Dr. Vijay is the immediate past President of the American Diabetes Association (Arizona Affiliate) and was chosen as Medical Chair for Diabetes Expo in March 2002; he is former Chairman of the National Conference on Diabetes State Management, sponsored by the American Diabetes Association.

Dr. Vijay has participated in more than 120 research trials focused on congestive heart failure, hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, coronary artery disease, plaque regression, peripheral vascular disease and diabetes/metabolic syndrome.

The American Heart Journal, New England Journal of Medicine, Medicine, Chest, Journal of Heart Failure, Circulation, Congestive Heart Failure, and the American Journal of Cardiology are among the journals wherein Dr. Vijay’s research and clinical activities have been published.

Jeffrey D. White, PhD
Research Endocrinologist

For more than 12 years, Dr. White has been an entrepreneur specializing in biopharmaceuticals and clinical informatics and has served as Senior Science Consultant at Bogart, Delafield, Ferrier LLC, a strategic consulting company for the pharmaceutical industry, Chief Scientific Officer of Predict, Inc., a clinical bioinformatics company, founder and President of Metacrine Sciences, Inc., a virtual drug discovery company and before that was a founding scientist and Director of Biochemistry and Cell Biology at Trophix Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Dr. White has extensive experience in developing business models and financial projections, defining corporate strategy and participating in all aspects of capital raising.

Prior to moving into industry, Dr. White was a tenured Associate Professor of Medicine/Endocrinology and Neurobiology & Behavior at SUNY Stony Brook and currently maintains an appointment as Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Animal Sciences, Rutgers University. Dr. White graduated cum laude from Wesleyan University and received his PhD from SUNY Stony Brook.
